ADX Average Directional Index: Gauging Trend Strength — ADX > 25 Means a Real Trend
The ADX Average Directional Index measures trend strength rather than direction. ADX above 25 signals a clear trend, below 20 indicates a ranging market. Combine with +DI/-DI to determine trend direction for long or short trades.
What Is ADX?
ADX (Average Directional Index) was invented by J. Welles Wilder in 1978 as part of his Directional Movement (DM) system. ADX only gauges trend strength, not direction — it tells you “whether a trend exists” but not “whether it’s up or down.”
Direction is provided by the two auxiliary lines, +DI and -DI: +DI > -DI indicates an uptrend, and -DI > +DI indicates a downtrend.
Calculation Principles (Simplified)
- Calculate +DM (positive directional movement) and -DM (negative directional movement)
- Calculate +DI and -DI (directional indicators) = 14-period smoothed DM / 14-period smoothed ATR × 100
- DX = |+DI - -DI| / (+DI + -DI) × 100 (directional index)
- ADX = 14-period moving average of DX (average directional index)
ADX is a smoothed version of DX, so it changes more slowly and steadily than the DI lines.
Parameter Settings
Common parameters:
- 14 — Default, most widely used
- 7 — More responsive, suitable for short-term trading
- 21 — Smoother, suitable for medium-term analysis
Beginners should use ADX(14), which is the default on Gate.io.
Signal Interpretation
Trend Strength Assessment
- ADX < 20 → No trend / ranging market, unclear direction
- ADX 20-25 → Trend is forming
- ADX 25-50 → Clear trend (moderate strength)
- ADX 50-75 → Strong trend
- ADX > 75 → Extremely strong trend (rare, usually during major crashes or parabolic rallies)
Direction Assessment (+DI/-DI)
- +DI > -DI → Uptrend
- -DI > +DI → Downtrend
- +DI and -DI cross → Direction shift
Key Combined Signals
- ADX rising + +DI > -DI → Uptrend strengthening, go long
- ADX rising + -DI > +DI → Downtrend strengthening, go short
- ADX declining → Trend weakening, preparing to shift into a range
Practical Tips
1. ADX > 25 Means a Real Trend
This is the most important application of ADX. Many traders use MACD or RSI for direction, but these indicators generate many false signals in ranging markets. Filter with ADX first:
- ADX < 20 → Don’t trade trend strategies; use grid trading or wait
- ADX > 25 → Trend is clear, you can use MACD/EMA or other trend-following strategies
On Gate.io’s BTC chart, when ADX breaks above 25 from below, the probability of a trending move over the next 1-2 weeks is roughly 70%.
2. ADX Turning Down = Trend Weakening
When ADX starts declining from a high level (above 40), the trend is weakening. This is not an immediate reversal signal — it’s a heads-up that the trend may be nearing its end.
Practical application:
- ADX turns down → Consider tightening your stop-loss
- ADX drops back below 25 → Trend has ended, prepare to exit
3. DI Crossover + Rising ADX = Direction Confirmation
When +DI crosses above -DI (golden cross) and ADX is rising → Uptrend confirmed, enter long. When -DI crosses above +DI (death cross) and ADX is rising → Downtrend confirmed, enter short.
DI crossover + rising ADX = most reliable signal. DI crossover but declining ADX = weak signal, prone to false crossovers.
Setting up ADX on Gate.io: Chart → Indicators → Search “ADX” → Add to sub-chart → ADX, +DI, and -DI will appear simultaneously.
Common Mistakes
- High ADX ≠ Always Bullish — ADX only shows trend strength; direction comes from the DI lines
- Don’t use any trend indicator when ADX is low — When ADX < 20, MACD golden/death crosses are just noise
- Expecting ADX to precisely predict reversals — ADX is a lagging indicator; it turns down only after the trend has already weakened
Combinations with Other Indicators
| Combination | Purpose |
|---|---|
| ADX + MACD | ADX filters trend strength, MACD determines direction and entry |
| ADX + KDJ | KDJ signals are more reliable when ADX > 25 |
| ADX + EMA | ADX confirms trend, EMA provides support/resistance |
| ADX + Bollinger Bands | ADX < 20 + BB contraction = range about to end |
ADX is a “trend filter,” not a direct trading signal. Core usage: ADX > 25 to use trend strategies, ADX < 20 to use range strategies or not trade. This is the most effective way to avoid getting repeatedly slapped by trend indicators in ranging markets.
