Alligator Indicator: The Sleeping Crocodile and the Waking Crocodile
The Alligator indicator uses three smoothed moving averages to determine whether the market is sleeping (ranging) or feeding (trending). In crypto trading, it helps identify key turning points where BTC trends begin and end.
Alligator Indicator: The Sleeping Crocodile and the Waking Crocodile
Introduction: The Market Is Like a Crocodile — When It’s Awake, Game Is Everywhere; When It’s Asleep, There’s Nothing to Catch
Bill Williams likened market behavior to a crocodile: the crocodile spends most of its time sleeping (market ranging), occasionally wakes to feed (market trending), and after a full meal goes back to sleep. If you try hunting while the crocodile is sleeping (using trend strategies during a range), you catch nothing and burn ammo (fees + stop-losses).
The Alligator indicator helps you determine whether the crocodile is “awake” or “asleep” — when it wakes (trend begins), you start hunting (trend following); when it sleeps (ranging period), you wait patiently and avoid trading. This “only trade during trends” philosophy is especially important in crypto — BTC ranges most of the time and trends only 10-20% of the time; you must wait for trending periods to earn big.
Indicator Principles: Three Moving Averages Weaving the Crocodile’s Body
The Alligator consists of three smoothed moving averages based on median price, representing the crocodile’s lips, teeth, and jaw.
Calculation Formula
Median Price:
Median Price = (High + Low) / 2
Lips (fastest):
Lips = SMMA(Median Price, 5, 3)
SMMA is the Smoothed Moving Average. The second parameter, 3, is the number of periods shifted into the future.
Teeth (medium):
Teeth = SMMA(Median Price, 8, 5)
Jaw (slowest):
Jaw = SMMA(Median Price, 13, 8)
What the Future Shift Means
The Lips are shifted by 3, Teeth by 5, and Jaw by 8 — these lines are displaced 3, 5, and 8 bars to the right (into the future).
Why the shift? Williams believed the distance between current price and the “nearest equilibrium point” (the moving average) reflects the market’s impulsive energy. With the shift, the crossover and divergence of the three lines more clearly display the state of the trend.
SMMA vs SMA vs EMA
SMMA produces smoother results:
SMMA(N) = [Previous SMMA × (N-1) + Current Median Price] / N
SMMA behaves like an ultra-long-period EMA — its smoothing effect is stronger than both SMA and EMA, reducing noise.
Three States of the Crocodile
Crocodile Sleeping (Ranging Period):
- The three lines are entangled — Lips, Teeth, and Jaw tightly intertwined
- Price oscillates between the three lines
- No clear trend direction
- Action: Stop trend-following strategies, wait for the crocodile to wake
Crocodile Awake and Feeding (Trending Period):
- The three lines separate — Lips are at the front (closest to price), Jaw at the back
- Price moves away from the lines, in the direction of the Lips
- The wider the mouth opens (distance between the three lines), the stronger the trend
- Action: Begin trend-following strategies, trade in the direction of the trend
Crocodile Full and Falling Back Asleep (Trend Ending):
- The three lines start converging — mouth gradually closing
- Price returns near the three lines
- Action: Trend has ended, exit trades, wait for the next trend
Parameter Settings
Default Parameters
- Lips: 5/3 (period 5, shift 3)
- Teeth: 8/5 (period 8, shift 5)
- Jaw: 13/8 (period 13, shift 8)
Crypto Market Recommended Parameters
| Timeframe | Parameters | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| All | Keep default | Williams system fixed parameters |
Do not change the 5/8/13 parameters. They form the core of Williams’ complete indicator system alongside AO(5/34) and AC(5). Altering any one breaks the system’s internal consistency.
Practical Usage
Scenario 1: Crocodile Waking — Confirming BTC Trend Launch
BTC oscillates between $90,000-$93,000 for two weeks, then starts rising.
4-hour Alligator signals:
- Ranging period: Three lines intertwined, Lips ≈ Teeth ≈ Jaw ≈ $91,500
- Price begins breaking upward: Lips move up first (fastest response)
- Teeth follow upward (after 8 periods)
- Jaw moves up last (after 13 periods)
- Three lines fully separated: Lips > $97,000, Teeth > $94,000, Jaw > $91,000 → Crocodile awake, mouth open
Action:
- Lips separating upward first → Initial trend confirmation
- Three lines fully separated → Confirmed entry, go long
- The wider the mouth opens, the stronger the trend, and the larger the position you can take
Scenario 2: Crocodile Feeding — Trading Along the Trend Direction
BTC in an uptrend, Alligator mouth wide open.
Alligator mouth wide open = hallmark of an active trending period:
- Lips far above Jaw → Strong trend
- Price moving in the Lips’ direction → Trade along the trend
- AO > 0 + AC > 0 → Momentum and acceleration both upward → Confirm going long
Key rule: During the feeding phase, only trade in the direction the mouth is pointing. If the mouth opens upward, only go long; if downward, only go short.
May 2026 real trade: BTC rose from $95,000 to $108,000 — the 4-hour Alligator mouth stayed open for about 10 days. Only long trades for 10 days, no counter-trend trades — maximizing profit.
Scenario 3: Crocodile Full and Falling Asleep — Exit Signal for Trend End
BTC reaches $108,000 and starts pulling back.
Alligator signals:
- Lips turn first (5-period fast response)
- Three lines begin converging — mouth gradually closing
- Price returns near the three lines, crossing the Lips
- Three lines re-entangled → Crocodile falling back asleep
Action:
- Lips turning → Begin reducing position (trend may be ending)
- Three lines converging into entanglement → Clear out and exit (trend confirmed ended)
- Don’t trade trend strategies while the crocodile sleeps — wait for the next awakening
Common Misuses
1. Using Trend Strategies While the Crocodile Sleeps
This is the most common and most fatal mistake. When the three lines are entangled, there is no trend — using moving average following, breakout entry, and other trend strategies will only result in repeated stop-losses. In ranging periods, use range strategies or don’t trade.
2. Trading Against the Crocodile’s Direction
The crocodile’s mouth is open upward (trend up), but you go short — you’re hunting against the direction the crocodile is feeding. This guarantees losses. Always only trade in the direction the mouth is pointing.
3. Using Alligator for Precise Entry Points
Alligator tells you “whether a trend exists” and “the trend direction,” but not “at what price to enter.” Precise entry requires Fractals (the fractal indicator) or AO/AC crossover signals.
4. Ignoring the Shift Effect
The three lines are shifted into the future by 3/5/8 bars — meaning the line positions represent “shifted” equilibrium points, not “current” ones. The relationship between price and the shifted lines is the core of Alligator signals; don’t ignore the shift.
Combinations with Other Indicators
Alligator + AO + AC: Williams Triple System
This is the standard combination:
- Alligator: Trend existence (crocodile state)
- AO: Momentum direction (trend force)
- AC: Momentum acceleration (force change)
Complete decision process:
- Check Alligator first: Only trade when mouth is open
- Check AO: Confirm momentum direction matches mouth direction
- Check AC: Confirm acceleration direction is aligned
- All three aligned → Enter; misaligned → Wait
Alligator + Fractals: Trend Confirmation + Entry Point
- Alligator mouth open + Fractal breakout appears → Precise entry
- Upward Fractal breakout + Crocodile mouth open upward → Enter long
- Downward Fractal breakout + Crocodile mouth open downward → Enter short
- Fractals confirm price breakout; Alligator confirms trend direction
Alligator + Choppiness Index: Dual Trend/Range Confirmation
- Alligator mouth open + CHOP < 38 → Dual confirmation of trend
- Alligator entangled + CHOP > 62 → Dual confirmation of range
- When both indicators confirm simultaneously, strategy selection is more reliable
Summary
The Alligator crocodile indicator’s metaphor is vivid — the market is like a crocodile. When it wakes, prey is everywhere (trend); when it sleeps, there’s nothing to catch (range). Your task is simple: wait for the crocodile to wake before you start hunting.
Key usage points:
- Three lines entangled = crocodile sleeping = range — Stop trend strategies
- Three lines separated = crocodile awake = trend — Begin trend strategies
- The wider the mouth, the stronger the trend — Wide mouth allows larger positions
- Always only trade in the mouth’s direction — Never go against the trend
- Three lines converging = crocodile full and asleep = trend ending — Clear out and exit
- Must be used alongside AO and AC — Williams three-indicator system
