Parabolic SAR: Trailing Stop-Loss + Trend Reversal Signal

The Parabolic SAR indicator continuously adjusts stop-loss points as the trend progresses. When the trend continues, SAR follows price movement; when price touches SAR, it发出 a reversal signal. Ideal for setting trailing stop-losses.

What Is SAR?

SAR (Parabolic SAR — Stop And Reverse) was invented by J. Welles Wilder in 1978. The name “SAR” stands for Stop And Reverse — stop, then reverse direction.

SAR’s core function is trailing stop-loss: it places a series of dots below price (in uptrends) or above price (in downtrends), gradually approaching price as the trend progresses. When price touches the SAR dots, it’s a stop/reversal signal.

Calculation

SAR’s calculation is relatively complex; the core logic:

  1. Initial SAR is set to the previous wave’s extreme值 (uptrend = previous low, downtrend = previous high)
  2. SAR accelerates toward price each period: SAR = Previous SAR + AF × (EP - Previous SAR)
  3. EP (Extreme Point) = Current wave’s highest/lowest price
  4. AF (Acceleration Factor) starts at 0.02, increases by 0.02 each time EP makes a new high/low, maximum 0.20

The acceleration factor makes SAR approach price like a parabola — early in the trend, SAR is far from price (wide stop); as the trend continues, SAR gets closer (tightening stop).

Parameters

Common parameters:

  • Step 0.02, Maximum 0.20 — Default, suitable for most situations
  • Step 0.01, Maximum 0.10 — More宽松, suitable for larger timeframes (daily/weekly)
  • Step 0.03, Maximum 0.30 — More responsive, suitable for short-term (1-hour/4-hour)

New traders should use default parameters. Gate.io’s SAR defaults to 0.02/0.20.

Signal Interpretation

Uptrend

  • SAR dots below price → Uptrend continues
  • Price touches SAR dot → Uptrend ends, reversal signal (stop-loss sell)

Downtrend

  • SAR dots above price → Downtrend continues
  • Price touches SAR dot → Downtrend ends, reversal signal (stop-loss buy / close short)

SAR Flip

  • SAR jumps from below to above → Switching from uptrend to downtrend
  • SAR jumps from above to below → Switching from downtrend to uptrend

Practical Tips

1. SAR as a Trailing Stop-Loss

This is SAR’s most practical usage. After entry, don’t set a fixed stop — use SAR dots as the stop reference:

  • When going long: Stop below current SAR dot
  • When going short: Stop above current SAR dot
  • As the trend progresses, SAR continuously moves up (long) or down (short), automatically tightening the stop

In Gate.io BTC contract trading, using SAR for trailing stops is more灵活 than fixed stops: wide stops early in the trend (not容易被 noise hit), tight stops later (locking in more profit).

2. SAR Flip = Trend Reversal

When SAR jumps from below price to above (or vice versa), the trend has reversed. This is one of the clearest reversal signals available.

Practical usage:

  • SAR flip + MACD same-direction cross → Double-confirmed reversal
  • SAR flip but MACD未确认 → Possibly short-term波动, observe

3. SAR Doesn’t Work in Ranging Markets

During ranging markets, SAR flips频繁, producing大量 false signals. Only use SAR when ADX > 25 (clear trend).

Setting up SAR on Gate.io: Chart → Indicators → Search “SAR” or “Parabolic SAR” → Add to main chart → SAR dots appear directly alongside price.

Common Mistakes

  1. Using SAR in ranging markets — SAR repeatedly flips during横盘, extremely many false signals. Must first use ADX to filter
  2. Immediately reversing on SAR flip — A flip只是提醒 “trend可能转向,” not a 100% confirmed signal
  3. Making parameters too sensitive — Starting AF at 0.03 makes SAR更快 approach price,更容易被 noise hit stops

Combinations with Other Indicators

CombinationPurpose
SAR + ADXUse SAR when ADX > 25, don’t use when ADX < 20
SAR + MACDMACD confirms direction, SAR provides trailing stop
SAR + EMAEMA sets direction, SAR sets stop level

SAR is the most直观 trailing stop tool — dots below → go long, touch → stop. Much more convenient than手动调整 stops. But记住 the core前提: SAR only适合 trending markets, absolutely don’t use it in ranging markets. First confirm trend strength with ADX, then use SAR for trailing stops.
