VWAP Volume-Weighted Average Price: The Benchmark Price for Institutional Traders

VWAP Volume-Weighted Average Price is institutional traders' benchmark price, calculating the daily average price weighted by volume. Price above VWAP indicates bullish territory; below VWAP indicates bearish territory. The core reference line for intraday trading.

What Is VWAP?

VWAP (Volume Weighted Average Price) is the benchmark price most commonly used by institutional traders. It weights each trade’s price by volume, calculating “the market’s true average cost for today.”

Simply: If you divide all traders’ total transaction value by total volume today, you get VWAP.

VWAP is widely used in traditional stock markets by institutional traders — fund managers aim to “buy below VWAP” (buying cheaper than the average cost), which indicates good trade execution.

Calculation

VWAP = Cumulative(Price × Volume) / Cumulative Volume

Updated with each bar: accumulates from the day’s first bar through the last.

Note: VWAP is an intraday indicator, recalculated from zero each trading day. VWAP on daily or weekly charts has little meaning.

Parameters

VWAP has no parameter设置 — it’s simply the weighted average accumulated from the day’s opening. Some platforms offer “Multi-Day VWAP” (MVWAP), extending VWAP continuously across days, but the core usage is intraday VWAP.

Signal Interpretation

Price Above VWAP

  • Bulls dominate → Today’s buyers are more积极 than sellers
  • Institutions倾向于买入 → Price可能 continue rising
  • Support reference → VWAP line becomes intraday support

Price Below VWAP

  • Bears dominate → Today’s sellers are more积极 than buyers
  • Institutions倾向于卖出 → Price可能 continue falling
  • Resistance reference → VWAP line becomes intraday resistance

Price Oscillating Around VWAP

  • Bull/bear balance → Intraday ranging market
  • Once price明显偏离 VWAP → Direction starts becoming clear

Practical Tips

1. VWAP Reversion Strategy

The simplest VWAP strategy for intraday trading: price偏离 VWAP then大概率回归.

Practical rules:

  • Price more than 1% above VWAP → Wait for reversion to VWAP to go long (or take profit at the high)
  • Price more than 1% below VWAP → Wait for reversion to VWAP to go short (or buy at the low)
  • Stop at 2% deviation from VWAP

On Gate.io BTC/USDT intraday trading, after price deviates 1.5%+ from VWAP, the概率 of returning to VWAP is approximately 70%.

2. VWAP Direction判断

VWAP line’s own direction is also important:

  • VWAP持续上升 → Today’s整体 buying strength is strong
  • VWAP持续下降 → Today’s整体 selling strength is strong
  • VWAP横盘 → Today’s ranging

3. VWAP + Volume Confirms Breakout

Price breaks VWAP line +放大 volume → Direction confirmed. Price breaks VWAP but volume不大 → Possibly false breakout, will return to VWAP.

Setting up VWAP on Gate.io: Chart → Indicators → Search “VWAP” → Add to main chart → One line显示当日 weighted average price.

Common Mistakes

  1. Using VWAP on daily charts — VWAP只适合 intraday (recalculated from opening); daily VWAP意义不大
  2. How VWAP works in 24-hour crypto markets — Gate.io’s VWAP accumulates从 UTC 00:00, which is a “virtual opening time”
  3. VWAP as a trailing stop line — VWAP更适合 direction reference and reversion target; not ideal as stop (use ATR-based stops for intraday)

Combinations with Other Indicators

CombinationPurpose
VWAP + RSIRSI overbought/oversold + VWAP above/below = double direction确认
VWAP + EMAEMA sets trend direction, VWAP determines intraday bull/bear
VWAP + ATRVWAP sets direction, ATR sets stop

VWAP is the “fair price line” for intraday traders — price above VWAP means buyers are出价更积极 than sellers; below means sellers更积极. Simple,直观, no parameters. The core intraday reference: Go long when price confirms above VWAP; go short when price confirms below VWAP.
