Williams %R Indicator: Overbought Above -20, Oversold Below -80

What Is Williams %R?

Williams %R was invented by Larry Williams in 1973. It measures the relative position of the current closing price within the past N days’ price range — an oscillator. Its calculation logic is几乎 identical to KDJ’s RSV,只是 expressed differently — Williams %R is an inverted stochastic值, ranging from -100 to 0.

Simply: Williams %R tells you where the current price sits within the recent high-low range.

Calculation

%R = (N-day Highest Price - Current Close) / (N-day Highest Price - N-day Lowest Price) × (-100)

Note the multiplier is -100, so the range is -100 to 0:

• Close equals N-day highest price → %R = 0 (strongest)
• Close equals N-day lowest price → %R = -100 (weakest)

Parameters

Common crypto parameters:

• 14 — Default, suitable for daily charts
• 9 — More responsive, suitable for 4-hour and 1-hour
• 21 — Smoother, suitable for weekly charts

New traders should use Williams %R(14), Gate.io’s default parameter.

Signal Interpretation

Three Zones

• %R between -20 and 0 → Overbought zone, price偏强 but可能回调
• %R between -80 and -100 → Oversold zone, price偏弱 but可能反弹
• %R between -20 and -80 → Normal zone, no extreme signals

Key Signals

• %R recovers from oversold zone (below -80) and breaks above -80 → Bottom reversal signal (buy)
• %R falls from overbought zone (above -20) and breaks below -20 → Top reversal signal (sell)
• %R stays in overbought zone for 3+ consecutive days → Strong trend持续, don’t rush to reverse
• %R stays in oversold zone for 3+ consecutive days → Weak trend持续, don’t rush to buy the dip

Practical Tips

1. Oversold Zone Breakout Buy Strategy

The most classic Williams %R usage: enter long when %R rises above -80 from below.

Practical rules:

• %R falls below -80 → Enter oversold zone (watch, don’t act)
• %R rises above -80 → Reversal确认, enter long
• Stop-loss below近3日 lowest price - 1-2%
• Target when %R reaches -20 vicinity

2. Consecutive Overbought判断 Strong Trend

Many people want to sell as soon as %R接近 0, but this恰恰是 strong trend特征. When %R stays above -20 for 5+ consecutive bars, the uptrend is非常强劲 — you shouldn’t逆势 go short.

Correct approach: In strong trends, treat %R dropping below -50 as a profit-taking信号, not sell just因为 overbought.

3. Williams %R Divergence

Like RSI, Williams %R also has divergence signals:

• Price new high + %R没有 new high → Top divergence
• Price new low + %R没有 new low → Bottom divergence
