O Que É 2FA?

2FA adds second verification step beyond password:

• Factor 1: Password (something you know)
• Factor 2: Phone/app code (something you have)
• Result: Even if password stolen, attacker cannot access without second factor

Google Authenticator Setup

Step 1: Install App

• Android: Google Play → “Google Authenticator”
• iOS: App Store → “Google Authenticator”
• Alternative: Authy (cloud backup), Microsoft Authenticator

Step 2: Enable on Gate.io

1. Login no Gate.io
2. Settings → Security → Two-Factor Authentication
3. Click “Enable” para Google Authenticator
4. QR code appears — Scan with Authenticator app
5. Backup key appears — WRITE DOWN on paper immediately!
6. Enter 2FA code — From Authenticator app, to confirm setup
7. Complete — 2FA enabled

Step 3: Save Backup Key

CRITICAL: The backup key (16-character string) lets you restore 2FA if phone lost:

• Write on paper — Not digital, not photo, not cloud
• Multiple copies — Store em 2+ safe locations
• Never share — Not with anyone
• Test restoration — Try restoring on another device to verify

Without backup key: If phone lost/broken, you may permanently lose account access.

2FA on Other Platforms

Email (Gmail)

1. Google Account → Security → 2-Step Verification
2. Add Google Authenticator
3. Save backup codes Google provides

MetaMask / Other Wallets

• MetaMask uses password locally (no 2FA built-in)
• Protect with hardware wallet (Ledger) for added security

Bank Apps

• Most Brazilian banks already require 2FA
• Ensure enabled for PIX transactions

Daily 2FA Usage

Login

1. Enter email + password
2. Enter 6-digit code from Authenticator app
3. Code changes every 30 seconds — use current code
4. If code expired, wait for new one

Withdrawals

1. Every withdrawal requires 2FA
2. Enter code to confirm withdrawal
3. Extra protection against unauthorized withdrawals

Security Changes

• Changing password: Requires 2FA
• Changing email: Requires 2FA
• Adding withdrawal address: Requires 2FA + 24h delay

Common 2FA Issues

Code Not Working

• Time sync — Authenticator relies on accurate time
• Fix: Settings → Time correction for codes → Sync now
• Expired code — Each code valid for 30 seconds only
• Multiple attempts — Try next code (wait 30s)

Phone Lost/Broken

• Use backup key — Enter on new Authenticator install
• Contact support — If no backup key (difficult recovery)
• Recovery process: May take days, requires identity verification

Account Recovery without 2FA

If you lost both phone AND backup key:

1. Contact Gate.io support — With ID verification
2. Provide KYC documents — Prove identity
3. Wait — Recovery takes 3-7 days typically
4. Not guaranteed — Some exchanges may not recover

This is why backup key is CRITICAL — Don’t skip this step.
